2013 Cincy Winter Beerfest Preview and Guide

We are a short week away from the premier annual beer tasting event in Cincinnati – Cincy Winter Beerfest.  This celebration of beer takes place at the Duke Energy Convention Center on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16.  Rolling into it’s 6th year, it boasts the largest number of beers to date and a new focus on gourmet food pairings.  Need tickets?  Hurry up and buy a regular, VIP, or connoisseur ticket.  The big news of this year’s event is that the beer list is pushing 365 unique beers.  Yeah, that’s a one per day beer drinking under one roof.  Impressive, no matter how snobby.  Speaking of which – there have been grumblings about the beer list not having a “wow” factor for the super beer nerds (or beer snobs).  To that I say, “haters gonna hate.”

Where am I headed?  Glad you asked.

Step 1: Drink. Local. Beer.

First stop for me? MadTree Brewing Company.  Hands down – not doubt about it – the place I intend to seek out first.  Hoping to catch their Gnarly Brown and Psychopathy IPA.  And, well, anything else they decide to schlep down there.  From there it’s over to Blank Slate.  I have been delinquent in partaking in their newer brews – namely, Fume and (the I believe unreleased) Shroominous.  Scott knocks it out of the park every time so I’m confident in these offerings.  After that, I’m probably going for some barrel aged Triple Digit Aftermath and some Listermann Jungle Honey.  Anything Fifty West is pouring.   I’d like to grab a Mt. Carmel BOS or Obsidian if they bring some snapshots.  If I have time, some Cellar Dwellar Lookout Stout and Dead Dweller.  Then maybe a perusal of the Rockbottom collection.

Step 2. Try not to vomit or fall over.

So after blazing a trail with some locals it’s time to take on the rest of the country.  I’m intrigued by or a fan of the following:

Sixpoint Resin, Stone 11.11.11/12.12.12, Troeg’s Mad Elf, Two Brothers Domaine DuPage, Uinta Hop Notch/Sea Legs, Upland Double Dragonfly, Weasel Boy War Dance/Bitter Sable/others, West 6ht IPA/Amber, Oskar Blues G’Knight/Deviant Dale’s, Ommegang Three Philosophers, Ohio Brewing Double Irish Red, New Holland Dragon’s Milk, Leinenkugal Big Eddy RIS, Jolly Pumpkin (any), Hoppin Frog BORIS, Green Glash Pallet Wrecker, Great Crescent Bourbon Stout, Goose Island Pere Jacques/Juliet 2012, Founders Imperial Stout, Fathead’s Headhunter, Finch’s Fascist Pig, Epic Hopulent, Dominion stout and pale, Coronado Islander IPA, anything on the Belgian and Friends truck, and of course – my ever beloved Ballast Point SCULPIN!

Step 3. The lightning round.

Anything else that finds it way to my liver (not including water) is just a bonus.  This is sure to be a long and probably painful night for my wife.  Fortunately, we secured a hotel room at the Millenium so we can crash safely.  In all seriousness, I have high hopes of drinking a lot of water throughout but we’ll see how that goes.

I’ll be there Saturday rocking my nerdy connoisseur ticket.  If you see me, feel free to say hello or shout mean words.
