Arrogant Bastard Ale – Double Bastard – 93
San Diego’s legendary Stone Brewing Company decided a number of years ago that a single bastard just wouldn’t satisfy the above-average beer drinker. Way back in 1998 they rolled out this malt and hop 2×4 to the dome. The 2012 iteration carries on the tradition to slay your thirst 11.2% ABV at a time.
It pours a dark ruby red with a fluffy off-white head. You can detect the warmth in your nostrils upon the first whiff. First swig brings upfront malt and then beats up the back of your tongue with hop bitterness. Some sort of citrusy variety by my best guess. The body is substantial and provides a nice creamy texture.
It definitely warms you up as you move through the bomber. The alcohol is ever present, reminding you not to drive anywhere, but not overpowering. For such a high octane beer it goes down damn smooth.
Is it a super complex Belgian? No. Will it make you look like a twill-jacket-with-elbow-patches-pipe-smoking-academia-pretentious-ass? No. However, it’s definitely worth knocking back when you want to drown out the misery of the past work week. It’s like drinking a High Life times a billion.
It grabbed my hand and forced a purchase at Jungle Jim’s for a very reasonable $7.99.
