Braxton Brewing Core Lineup Revealed

Things are heating up at Covington’s Braxton Brewing as they prepare to open their doors Friday, March 27. The keg collars for their first five beers have been revealed and give us a glimpse at their initial core lineup plus a seasonal beer.

COREBraxton Brewing Keg Collar

Storm – Golden Cream Ale 4.8% ABV

Jumper – Hoppy Wheat Ale 5.5% ABV

Crank Shaft – IPA 6% ABV

Dead Blow – Tropical Stout 7.2% ABV

Trophy – Pale Ale 5.2% ABV

They plan to launch with Storm and Jumper in the taproom and at retail accounts on draft.

The make up of this lineup seems pretty logical with a range of popular styles and doesn’t really hold an surprises. Although, I’m intrigued by the Dead Blow “tropical stout” which I’m guessing may be a foreign extra/export stout which isn’t exactly common these days. The BJCP style description for the style reads:

A very dark, moderately strong, roasty ale. Tropical varieties can be quite sweet, while export versions can be drier and fairly robust.

A rather broad class of stouts, these can be either fruity and sweet, dry and bitter, or even tinged with Brettanomyces (e.g., Guinness Foreign Extra Stout; this type of beer is best entered as a Specialty Beer – Category 23). Think of the style as either a scaled-up dry and/or sweet stout, or a scaled-down Imperial stout without the late hops.

You may also notice the naming convention of the beers seems to be pretty mechanical and utilitarian in nature. This falls in line with the “COV” gear mark found in their branding and relates to the somewhat gritty imagery used.

At any rate, this is a great indication of what is soon to come from this promising rookie brewery. We should know much more about their plans very soon!

Grand Opening Update

The doors will open at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27th. Programming will begin at 7 p.m. The event highlights will include: four of Braxton’s beers on tap, Keith Neltner and the Neltner Small Batch team revealing his largest indoor installation, two local bands, and tours of the brewery.
