BrewBox aims to be the Netflix of beer
I came across a new beer-related service that really caught my attention. It’s called BrewBox and it aims to use Netflix-like recommendation technology to help beer lovers discover and purchase new beers. I’ve always been frustrated by the beer of the month clubs currently available. They tend to ship 3-4 crappy “micro” brewed beers that are usually macrobrewery owned.
You don’t find any that will ship Surly or Cigar City or Founders. But this new site, just launched Monday, might be the answer.
When you first register you are asked to rate at least 10 beers to get started. You get 4-5 beer labels tiled horizontally on your screen with a simple thumbs up/down or Want It button. I ended up ranking way more than 10 since it was fun to see what would pop up. The list is pretty expansive so far and I’m sure it will be augmented over time.
Once you’ve down that, you’re in the system which allows you to then review beers, make friends, share beer opinions socially, and best of all add beers to your queue. Beers in your queue can them be purchased at regular retail prices with a flat 20% shipping and handling fee.
It’s still in its infancy but I could see this picking up steam. Ideally, it would help craft beer lovers discover new beers and get access to beers ordinarily not distributed in their market.
I will be keeping an eye on the service as it evolves. You should do the same.

Now, BrewBox takes the customization of beer tastes off the screen and into the beer-lover’s home or office. Each BrewBox shipment will consist of six beers, with the option to add or remove items. Subscribers pay only for the cost of the beer, plus a flat 20% packaging and delivery fee. Invites will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
