Celebrate American Craft Beer Week in the Queen City
American Craft Beer Week is upon us! This kick-ass Hallmark holiday takes place May 13-19 this year and, per the Brewers Association, this Congressionally lauded period “offers an exciting opportunity for small and independent craft brewers and the community of better beer retailers to celebrate the ever advancing beer culture here in the U.S. Plus, tens of thousands of today’s beer beginners, beer enthusiasts, and hard core beer geeks make time to toast the week.” The city of Cincinnati is home to many small and independent craft brewers along with a large number of restaurants and bars that believe in serving quality, flavorful, well-crafted beer. It helps put some spotlight on craft beer for the uninformed public and lines up a bunch of great beer events for the serious beer nerds. Here are my pick’s for the week (yeah, I’m a little late – damn day job):
Tuesday, May 14
Listermann Brewing is screening the film, Michael Jackson – The Beer Hunter, at 7pm at their tap room. This is apparently the first showing in Cincinnati and only the second ever public showing of the film. To be clear, this isn’t the amazing singer turned surgical nightmare but rather the godfather of good beer. The film was over by the time I posted but watch this clip from Conan to get a flavor for what this cat was all about (RIP!).
Wednesday, May 15
Parkers Blue Ash Tavern is hosting a five course beer dinner paired with Listermann/Triple Digit beers. Courses will include First Course: Tuna Tacos (Cucumber Salsa, Jalapeno Crema, Cilantro) with Serpentine Wheat; Second Course: Fish and Chips (Battered Pacific Cod, Crispy Plantain, Napa Cabbage) with Leopold; Third Course: Beer Belly and Pork Rinds (Smoked Pork Belly, Spicy Pork Rinds, Avocado) with Jungle Honey; Entrée Course: Ohio Steak and Potatoes (Ribeye Two Ways, Asparagus, Roasted Beef Jus) with Aftermath; Dessert Course: “Nutty Bars” (Fresh Peanut Butter, Wafers, Chocolate) with Nutcase.
Reservations can be secured by calling Parkers at (513) 891-8300; limited space with capacity at 40. Tickets are $40 apiece.
Thursday, May 16
Market Wines, next door to Findlay Market, is pulling out the stops for ACBW. At 5pm they tap four famous Michigan beers including the ever elusive Founder’s KBS! Others include Founder’s Double Trouble, Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree, and Bell’s Hell Hath No Fury. Not enough? Okay, well show up between 5-6:30PM and receive a lottery ticket to get a chance to buy bottles of Bell’s Black Note (a barrel aged imperial stout that I would trade one of my children for), Founder’s KBS, and Founder’s Doom. There may even be some other hidden gems doled out. Drawing is at 7PM.
Meet legendary craft brewer, Jeremy Kosmicki of Founder’s Brewing fame, at the Moerlein Lager House as he shares his story of moving from home brewer to top-of-his-game professional. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your seat. $15 gets you in the door and a Founder’s beer.
Wild Mike’s Wings (Shady Lane location) is busting out their Randall again at 6pm! This time they will be taking the already delicious MadTree PsycHOPapthy IPA and pumping it up with a boatload more hops to please the hopivore in all of us. You can’t beat their wings and the Randall is always fun!
The Lackman is having a Founder’s Brewing special as they tap a very rare keg of Doom (barrel aged imperial IPA). Another 2 bucks means you can take home a cool Founder’s tulip glass. Tappings start at 5pm so get there early!
Friday, May 17
Fries Cafe is tapping Founder’s Doom at 6pm in case you missed it on Thursday. Get there early is probably won’t last long!
Everything’s D’Vine hosts their usual Friday Night beer tasting which is always an EXCELLENT time for $15 starting at 5:30PM.
Saturday, May 18
Whole Foods Market in Mason holds their first Craft Beer and Food Festival bringing in over 30 breweries paired with good eats. Purchase your ticket in advance for $20 ($25 day of) to get 20 tickets redeemable for food or beer. I’m most excited to see Jolly Pumpkin represented! Hoping to make it up there myself.
It’s Chickow! day at Triple Digit as they release bottles of their bourbon barrel aged variant of their tasty double hazelnut brown ale. There will also be other variants on tap and in casks to celebrate the special occassion: bourbon, brandy, cask cinnamon sticks/vanilla/raisins, coffee, and nitro!
Sunday is relatively quiet so it would probably be a good idea to just sit at home and knock back a few local beers as you waste away your day. Enjoy your week!
