Cincinnati breweries gearing up to celebrate All-Star Game
Two of Cincinnati’s richest heritages lie in baseball and beer. This summer, they will collide while the world’s eyes descend upon the Queen City to take in one of the summer’s most popular professional sporting events at the MLB All-Star Game. Our resurgent brewing movement takes this opportunity to showcase their talent in the form of new baseball themed beers and special events. I’ve got a complete run-down of what our local breweries are doing to celebrate the mid-summer classic.
Rhinegeist Brewery got in the baseball spirit when they introduced cans of their Hustle rye pale ale at the beginning of the season. They then held a vote to crowd source a recipe new for a beer to be rolled out next week in draft and 22oz bottles. Streaker, as it was named in the contest, is an American pale ale featuring Cara Red and Ryle specialty malts. The hop bill is made up of the uber popular (and delicious) Citra and Mosaic hops.
MadTree Brewing just announced they were going to can their previously draft only, Rounding Third. It is a generously hopped red IPA with a can that features a tree design that resembles the now famous handlebar mustaches that has become ubiquitous with the All-Star Game. Rounding Third will be a seasonal offering featuring a “Reds” red colored can — check out the full label below in the gallery.
Rivertown Brewing will also be creating a new beer to celebrate a local Reds legend with their Nuxy’s Red Rye-P-A. This 20 barrel limited release will be available in the taproom and in distribution as well. They describe it as, “A super rye’d out Pale Ale brewed with 41 pounds of Mosaic hops and about 20% rye malt in the grain bill. Nuxy’s blends a bright, tropical flavor reminiscent of pineapple and cannabis backed with a spicy, nutty, biscuit malt profile that will have you rounding third and heading for more.”
The breweries just across the river in Northern Kentucky are also getting in on the celebration:
Ei8ht Ball Brewing is introducing a special All Star edition of their flagship Red Drink — my personal favorite of their lineup. They also plan a special celebration in their taproom (see below).
Braxton Brewing has a new beer sitting in the fermenter right now that will be ready for the big game called 1957. If you recall, 1957 was the year Reds fans stuffed the ballot box to vote 7 out of 8 starters for the All Star Game. 1957 is an English Mild intended to taste much like baseball’s famous Cracker Jacks.
In addition to some great beers being offered, there are number of excellent beer related events being sponsored by the breweries for locals and out of town guests alike.
Moerlein Lager House will be hosting ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike morning show on Monday, July 13 and Tuesday, July 14 from 6AM to 10AM (doors open at 5AM). They will be offering a breakfast buffet and Bloody Mary bar, along all their taps.
Listermann Brewing will be holding its annual Cincinnati Craft Brewer’s Volksfest on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11. This festival brings beers from all of Cincinnati’s breweries in a giant tent outside the Listermann/Triple Digit brewery along with food and live music.
Fifty West will be hosting a very special Brewer’s Brunch with a baseball twist. It will be a similar format as their past brunches except this time expect four courses instead of three (1st-2nd-3rd-Home) on Sunday July 12th. The food will focus on ballpark grub turned “brunchy” by Executive Chef John Tomain all paired with local beers available at the ballpark including our own Wire to Wire Wheat. These always sell out fast so keep your eyes peeled for tickets to go on sale soon!
The Ei8ht Ball taproom plans to hold an all star beer tapping event featuring some of the world’s best breweries. Expect offerings from Mikkeller, De Molen, Nogne O, Evil Twin, and more. Details are still developing on this one.
Taft’s Ale House will be holding a weekend-long Summer Draft party outside across from their brewery at 15th and Race. They will be hosting live music all weekend long and featuring beer from MadTree Brewing, Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. Rhinegeist as well as summer selections from Taft’s Ale House. Eckerlin Meats from Findlay Market will serve food to pair with the beers. Admission is free and there will be ticket sales for beer. Friday July 10: Noon-11 PM, Saturday July 11: Noon-11 PM, Sunday July 12: Noon-11 PM
Bad Tom Smith will be airing the All-Star Game Tuesday night in their taproom with $3 pints all night and wings from NY New York Deli.
