Stout beer style fatigue
Okay beer nerds, am I alone in running into what I call “style fatigue” when you get burned out from drinking too much of a single beer style? In my case, I think I need to take a break from stouts. Stouts are often associated with the winter season with their hearty roast flavors, generally heavier body, and sometimes higher alcohol content. I really embraced the style this year and ran through more than 15 different stouts (or imperial stouts) this season. Side note: the stats feature for Untappd supporters is awesome!
However, the last few I’ve drank haven’t done anything for me. That includes a Founder’s Breakfast Stout I had the other night which is one of my all-time favorite beers. I know there’s a problem when the Breakfast Stout doesn’t do anything for me. The only stouts that have really resonated were bourbon barrel aged varieties – and that’s probably more due to the bourbon. I think I’ve had a stout overload lately.
Another sign that I may be burned out is I drank a couple of hoppy beers and was instantly excited by the burst of fresh flavor. It’s like my taste buds were welcoming brought back to life after months of eating gruel. I think I need to pump my body full of some Vitamin H with some heavy doses of lupulin.
Am I alone with my style burnout? Does the same thing happen to you sometimes?
